Holiday Crackdown on Impaired Drivers

Posted by Robert Berglund | Dec 23, 2024

The holidays are a time for vacations, celebrations, work parties, and family gatherings.  Unfortunately, many of these celebrations involve the consumption of alcohol, which means that the holiday season also sees a rise in DUI-related crashes, leading to preventable holiday accidents.  Law enforcement officers will be out in full force over the 2024 holiday season to look for drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and drugs.  Officers will be conducting regular patrols as well as DUI checkpoints.  Expect more patrols and checkpoints in and around locations that have a history of accidents involving DUI drivers.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has already increased its enforcement efforts over the 2024 holiday season to keep roads safe and protect families from tragedies caused by impaired driving.  CHP will deploy additional officers, implementing DUI checkpoints, and monitoring road safety to prevent crashes.  These early efforts set the stage for ongoing enforcement throughout the holiday season.  During this time of year, the risk becomes even greater as more people take to the roads to celebrate.

According to CHP statistics, DUI-related crashes typically spike during major holidays, such as Christmas and New Year's Eve.  These holiday accidents endanger not only impaired drivers but also innocent passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists on the road.  Through its Impaired Driver Enforcement Programs, CHP works tirelessly to reduce DUI-related crashes by targeting impaired drivers and raising public awareness.  These efforts include:

  • DUI Checkpoints: CHP regularly sets up DUI checkpoints throughout the state, especially during peak holiday periods, to screen for impaired drivers.
  • Saturation Patrols: These patrols place more officers on the road to monitor and identify signs of impaired driving.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: CHP partners with local communities and media to spread messages about the dangers of drinking and driving.
  • Arrests & Prosecution: Those caught driving under the influence face strict penalties, including fines, license suspension, and possible jail time.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and other local law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County will also be conducting DUI patrols and checkpoints during the 2024 holiday season.   LAPD selects locations for these checkpoints based on data related to DUI-related crashes and arrests.  The LAPD emphasizes that these checkpoints aim to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving and to prevent accidents by removing impaired drivers from the road.

If you are going to drink or use any drugs, do not drive a motor vehicle.  Uber, Lyft, taxis, and even Waymo rides are available throughout Los Angeles.  Do not become one of the DUI arrest statistics.  If you're reading this too late, and have already been arrested for suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles, CONTACT Berglund Law Office, P.C. today to schedule a free and confidential consultation.
